The Many Benefits of Vitamin D
The "Sunshine Vitamin"

Sunshine - trees - vitamin D

Vitamin D studies are being done all over the world - and the conclusions of these studies flys in the face of what we have been told and continue to be told from the government and the established medical community.

Any and all positive drug trials or studies are shouted from the rooftops and make headlines all over the world - Vitamin studies do not. . .

And of course, you must keep in mind, WHO is doing the studies. Those with a vested financial interest in the outcome - that's who. In any published study, you must ask yourself who did the study, and how are they connected to the drug company producing the drug being studied. Like a bloodhound - you must follow the "scent of the money".

From the current research and studies elsewhere - as well as a few in the U.S. - we learn of the many health benefits that can be contributed to optimal levels of Vitamin D.

It is a crucial component in building strong bones, both in children as well as adults and seniors.

In addition to strengthening bones, muscles and joints, high vitamin D levels have been linked with lower rates of colon, prostate, esophageal and pancreatic cancer.

Vitamin D also helps to kill breast cancer cells. It has been proven to be at least as effective as the drug "Tamoxifen" and yet it has no side-effects, even when taken in much larger doses than the FDA recommends.

It is a contributing factor in reducing cancers, some say up to 60% reduction.

In seniors, those with the highest levels of "The Sunshine Vitamin", had (four times less) the incidences of Colon Cancer than those people with the lowest levels.

Oddly, or not surprisingly - the American Cancer Society has been completely silent on the subject.

The studies also show that seniors are less likely to fall and injure themselves when they are taking an optimum level of this very important supplement

This important vitamin, which is actually a hormone - and part of a family of natural steroids - can help to activate your immune system. It produces Peptides which help kill bacterial invasions as well as viruses. You have receptors throughout your body and it signals your genes to produce important enzymes and proteins which impact your entire system in literally hundreds crucial and important ways. It has been proven to enhance athletic performance and endurance. It helps to strengthen teeth as well as bones.

.

We are warned to stay out of the sun - to strictly limit any sun exposure and to wear layers of sunscreen should we have the audacity to seek a bit of sunshine or enjoy outdoor activities.

But much higher incidences of illnesses are reported in the winter months, when there is less sunshine.

Vitamin D also appears to be one of the reasons multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases are much more common (nearly double) in the Northern states compared to the Southern. Washington state's rate of MS - is one of the highest in the US.

Blood samples taken from more than 7 million military personnel showed people with the highest levels of vitamin D were 62 percent less likely to develop MS than those with the lowest concentrations. A study in Finland found similar results.

It seems the further you live from the equator, the more likely you are to develop MS. Mutiple Sclerosis is relatively common in Britain ( and in particular, more prevalent in Scotland than in the rest of the United Kingdom) and more common in North America and the Scandinavian countries.

But it is almost unheard of , for example in, Malaysia or Ecuador.

However - we are still waiting for the "Medical profession" and others, to merely put "two and two together" and figure out the correlation between sunshine exposure - vitamin D and MS. They are still completely baffled and for the most part have yet to come up with "four".

Researchers are still looking for a possible "viral trigger". But this theory does not explain why MS is more common among those who live in northern latitudes and extremely uncommon in those near the equator.

Sunshine will help facilitate your body to manufacture Vitamin D - however the sunscreens on the market that we are told we must use or suffer the dire consequences - block the UVB rays which our bodies need to convert the sunshine into Vitamin D - while letting in the UVA rays which are proven to cause skin cancer!

Sunlight exposure can stimulate your body to produce 5000 units or more when doing outside activities. During the summer months - for just 15 minutes or so. However the government says that your daily intake should not exceed 200 units!

The studies say that 2,000 units for kids and 4,000 units for adults should be much more reasonable and at the levels that will promote healthy immune systems and bones , teeth and all the good healthy benefits that come with an adequate intake.

You can take a simple blood test that can tell you precisely what your levels are. In this way you can decide what amount you may need with the advice of a trusted Naturopath or M.D. with a history of using natural and holistic healing methods and knowledge of vitamins and supplements.

A recent study at ( Nationwide Children's Hospital ) - Researcher's conducted the first study to investigate Vitamin D insufficiency as it correlates to low bone density in children.

In the June issue of "Pediatrics" - 83 patients were studied - 80% of these patients had Vitamin D Insufficiency. All the patients had underlying chronic medical conditions that put them at risk of osteoporosis - which is not just seen in older adults - it is also seen in children and can actually originate in childhood.

This vitamin is essential in bone growth and mineralization in children as well as adults.

*"The study's lead author, Sasigarn Bowden, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist and attending physician in the Metabolic Bone Clinic at Nationwide Children's explains, "We need to check vitamin D levels in all patients with history of multiple fractures or low bone density and treat the vitamin deficiency problem if the levels are low. The supplementation of vitamin D should be a priority in the management of pediatric patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia in order to optimize their bone health and potentially prevent fractures."

"Potential factors that may account for this vitamin insufficiency in various chronic medical conditions include low vitamin D intake and decreased sun exposure. Four studies in Europe found that 80 percent of healthy children and adolescents had insufficient vitamin D levels in the winter."

* Nationwide Children's Hospital (2008, June 5). Vitamin D Insufficiency May Be Present In Pediatric Patients With Low Bone Density.
