Pink Slime Burgers

Pink slime burgers on the menu ! We are referring in part to an eye opening article by Michael Moss for the New York Times titled: "Safety of Beef Processing Method is Questioned" "A company in South Dakota - "Beef Products" - came up with a novel idea: injecting beef with Ammonia." This same company had already been trying to expand their horizons into the hamburger business. "With a product made from beef that included fatty trimmings the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil. The trimmings were particularly susceptible to contamination, but a study, commissioned by the company showed that the ammonia process would kill E.coli as well as salmonella." What is Pink Slime made of ?They pick up all the sweepings from the slaughterhouse floor where the contamination level ( as you can imagine ) is at the very worst levels, then grind the disgusting stuff into a paste. The nasty glop is put in a centrifuge to remove the fat and then treated with ammonia to slow spoilage and turned into a mushy mass and then frozen into either chips or blocks. This pink slime is then added to ground beef and with the U.S.D.A.'s wholehearted approval goes into America's hamburgers in some of the huge fast food chain restaurants as well as many of the grocery market chains and the school lunch program! In reading the articles... at least 70% of the hamburger meat on the shelves contains this nasty stuff. The U.S. Department of Agriculture allows the labeling of the pink ammonia slime to be labeled as merely a "processing agent". To add insult to injury... this gross stuff isn't even turning out to be very successful in destroying the pathogens reliably!
Slime Burgers.... and Laboratory Grown Pork What a tasty Combo Meal ! And Hey .... why stop with the slime? Scientists in Holland are growing meat in a laboratory - by taking cells from a live pig. This , so called , "cultured meat" is supposed to save the earth from greenhouse effect produced by farm animals - by growing meat from cells , thus completely by-passing the natural order of things. Why raise an animal when you can grow meat in a petri dish with a few cells? Great idea , but only, (IF) you are willing to eat this disgusting stuff ~! It's grown from the blood products of animal fetuses. And the result is a sticky mass of gooey muscle-like tissue that will require exercise to give it a better consistency and palatability.
mmmmm... Are you hungry yet?
