Quoting Dr. Cole on this important antioxidant compound and Alzheimer's research :

Dr. Greg M. Cole a Neuroscientist at the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare system - and associate director of the 'Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine', says that "Red wine, yellow curry (Curcumin) and Green Tea - have suspected health benefits because of high content of antioxidants."

"This study provides evidence that a compound called - EGCG, one of the major polyphenols in green tea, may be useful for diseases like 'Parkinson's' and 'Alzheimer's, because it can block the formation of the filament-forming protein aggregates implicated in causing disease" - Cole said.

Cole said that ... "One novel aspect of the study is the authours demonstration that EGCG prevents toxic filament formation by redirecting the aggregating proteins to make non-toxic proteins."

Cole also said that...."assuming that the green tea compound has a stable effect and chronically blocks toxicity to real neurons and synapses, it could have genuine potential for Alzheimer's patients."

In a study published in the 'Journal of Neuroscience' the researchers observed the effects of treating mice that had been genetically altered to develop Alzheimer's, with the antioxidant compound found in green tea.

After several months of treatment, involving daily injections of EGCG, results showed that the nerve cells of these mice had up to 54% less beta-amyloid protein than the un-treated mice.

Researcher Doug Shytle, PhD, of the University of South Florida said that : " This finding suggests that green tea extract selectively concentrating EGCG would be needed to override the counteractive effect of other flavonoids found in the tea."

Humans would probably need 1,500 to 1,600 milligrams per day of EGCG to get the amount that helped mice in the Alzheimer's study.

Researchers have tested the safety of those doses in people and found no major side effects.

Curcumin is derived from the curry spice turmeric. Curcumin has an extensive history as a food additive and herbal medicine in India and is also a potent polyphenolic antioxidant.

This study shows that insoluble beta -amyloid (Abeta ), soluble Abeta , and plaque burden were significantly decreased by 43-50%. And furthermore - "In view of its efficacy and apparent low toxicity, this Indian spice component shows promise for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease."
