Ginger may aid Digestion in Diabetics

"Ginger has often been called "the tummy tamer" when used by healthy individuals to calm a queasy stomach. Now it appears that it enhances digestion in diabetic individuals.

Researchers in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical Center noted that acute hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) generates prostaglandins that cause gastric slow wave disruption. "We hypothesized that ginger prevents disruption of slow wave rhythm by acute hyperglycemia via inhibition of prostaglandin production but not its actions."

Scientists measured stomach contractions in 22 healthy adults, who had received 1,000 mg of ginger root. The first measurement was taken after participants were given intravenous glucose to raise their blood sugar levels and the second, after they took misoprostol, a substance known to disrupt normal stomach rhythm. For the third and fourth measurements, participants took placebo, then the same amounts of glucose and misoprostol.

At the end of the study, it was noted that it significantly reduced the disruptive effect of elevated blood sugar on stomach rhythm, "indicating that ginger likely acts to blunt production of prostaglandins rather than inhibiting their action." The implication for diabetics is that taking ginger may help provide symptomatic relief of digestive disruptions if blood sugar levels become elevated."

Ginger Eases Morning Sickness Symptoms

"Ginger does not prevent morning sickness, but it may help mollify some of the nausea experienced by pregnant women, researchers reported in the April 2004 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Researchers from the University of South Australia in Adelaide gave nearly 300 women who were less than 16 weeks pregnant either 350 mg of ginger or 25 mg of pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B-6) three times per day for three weeks. Researchers found that both ginger and vitamin B-6, which is sometimes taken to counteract morning sickness, worked equally well at supporting mothers-to-be."

Ginger helps diminish nausea after Chemo

People who started taking Ginger Capsules several days before beginning their Chemotherapy treatment experienced less nausea afterwards than those given a placebo.

"We were slightly beside ourselves" to see how much it helped, said study leader Julie Ryan of the University of Rochester in New York.

The results of this study were released recently by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The prescriptions that are commonly given do a fairly good job of combating the vomiting - but approximately 75% of patients experience nausea of varying degrees. And these patients report that the nausea is sometimes worse than the vomiting. The use of Ginger cut the nausea down to much more manageable levels. Patients were asked to rate their nausea on a scale from 1 to 10 - they rated their levels at about 7 to 8 and with the Ginger, at levels of 2 or 3 - easily manageable.

This root has long been used in Oriental cultures for a variety of healthy benefits. Now, as it is studied here in the West in clinical trials - the established medical profession can agree that it clearly has wide reaching impact on our health and wellness and can be used without adverse side effects or drug interactions. We always have the capsules on hand and keep the dried root in a glass jar for a quick cup of tea - it's delicious and it quells a queasy stomach in no time.
