Nail Fungus Infection

Feb. - 2010, the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor Page" on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:

First Name: Beatrice
State/Prov: Florida
Country: United States
Your Question or Health Concern:
Dr., aloha, I've got toenail fungus and looks like its moved to my fingernails. Is this stuff moving thru my whole body? Is the Braggs apple cider vinegar the only path I can try? I spray the nails with tea tree oil and see a little improvement. Also even if I don't have celiac disease would a gluten free diet be a good way to go for a healthy life change? I've made a list of the "good/bad foods" and am going to go for it.
Thanks Dr.,
Beatrice

Dr. Rose's answer to Beatrice's nail fungus question :
Dear Beatrice,
The fungus will not invade your body. It is a very specialized pathogen, and only attacks the skin and it's appendages. You may be short of the element Selenium, as this seems to be one reason for being prone to fungus infection. My experience of extensive nail tinea is limited, but one thing is obvious, that you need to start by mechanically removing as much of the infected nail as possible. Clip the nail off right back to where it is attatched. This is needed to allow access for topical treatment, applied to the infected nail.
Apart from your suggestions, I would imagine Colloidal Silver might be useful. The drug terbinafine is pretty safe as a cream, and is best applied under occlusion (covered with something like micropore tape.)
Regarding your diet, you are correct in considering gluten as potentially harmful. It probably is not good for anyone, but tolerated by most people. If you don't have coeliac disease, you don't need to be too meticulous is avoiding it. It's very difficult to avoid completely.
Regards,
Dr. Jim Rose

Normal Oxygen Blood Levels

Jan. 2010, the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor" page on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:

First Name: Karen
State/Prov: Michigan
Country: United States
Your Question or Health Concern:
I wanted to know what the normal level for oxygen is? My mom is 88 years old and her oxygen level was 88 today. What should it be - or is that low or normal?

Dr. Jim's answer for Karen:
Hello Karen,Your mothers result may have been one of two measurements of oxygen. If it was obtained by a clip on her finger or ear, it was oxygen saturation. This measure is of the proportion of the oxygen carrying sites in her red blood cells, in her arteries, with oxygen attached.
The red blood cells contain haemoglobin, the oxygen carrier. Each molecule of this can carry 4 oxygens, but the sites may not be occupied. The oxygen saturation measures the average occupancy. It should be 95 - 100%
If she had a needle in an artery to get blood for the test, it was the partial pressure of oxygen in the fluid of her blood, PaO2. You can think of this as the concentration of oxygen dissolved in her blood, in the same way as you would think of how salty or sweet a drink is ( with different concentrations of salt or sugar.) The pO2 should be 80 to 100.
Very best wishes - Dr. Jim Rose

Un-explained Back Pain

On Dec, 2009, the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor Page" on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:

First Name: Barbara
State/Prov: Texas
Country: United States
Your Question or Health Concern: Dear Dr. Rose,

My Husband has a burning pain in the middle of his upper back and neck. Medication doesn't seem to help. He also has lower back pain and sometimes walks with an S shape to his lower back. (He) has trouble standing for long periods of time.

He has had has 5 stents and two balloons in two of his stents since January, Feb. and April 2009.

He takes MObic 15mg, is unable to take too much due to his heart medications. He is doing great since his last stents. He is now on Daraplaib a trial study drug through a cardiologist in Victoria, Tx.

Dr. Jim's answer to Barbara's question:

Dear Barbara,
Your husband's back and neck pain most likely come from his spinal joints and muscles, judging from what you wrote. There are very few diseases otherwise, which cause such extensive spinal pain.

Your doctor will be checking for metabolic disturbances and malignancy. Imaging by X-ray or otherwise, is very likely to show arthritis anyway, even if this has nothing to do with his pain. This can be a red herring, drawing people off the scent. Arthritis, being very common, can coexist with other conditions. If nothing else is found to explain the pain, the diagnosis needs to be made by hands on examination, by someone skilled in musculoskeletal medicine. X-rays etc... cannot tell where pain is coming from. Hopefully he will get relief from manual therapy and/or exercises.
Very best wishes to you both,
Dr. Jim Rose

Fibromyalgia ~ MS

On Tue Nov - 2009, the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor" form on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:

First Name: Sana
State/Prov: Vienna
Country: Austria

Your Question or Health Concern: Hi Dr.Rose,
My name is Sana and I lived most my life in different countries. I lived in Germany 8 yrs,6 yrs in Indiana USA,and now I live in Austria.

Well, my mother has Fibromylagia since 2004.She has been to countless Doctors in the States and Europe but all of them have been giving her pain killers. The pain killers have made her situation worse. She is always under pain and sleeping problems.I have looked up alot of websites and all of them sell books for certain diseases. When I looked up the book reviews its nothing positive.

I like this site because it seems there is no interest in money gain. I would like to really know if there is a cure for Fibromylagia or only false accusations. If there is a cure what would my mother have to do to get healthy again?

I also have a boyfriend that has Multiple Sclerosis. He was diagnosed with MS 7 yrs ago. His case is not that bad like from some other MS patients. He gets attacks once in a while and depressive mood swings. He also gets numbness in legs and weakness of the body. His eyesight is getting worse too. Plz - is there a cure for M.S.?
Thanks

Dr. Jim Rose reply to Sana's questions:
Dear Sana,
Both Fibromyalgia and Multiple Sclerosis are conditions where every sufferer will have slightly different disturbances of their body chemistry.

MS may be largely due to toxicity from herbicide exposure, either directly in agricultural or domestic use, or indirectly from residues in food.

Fibromyalgia is likely to be related to food intolerance, deficiencies of trace elements (including magnesium) -inadequate water intake, dysbiosis in the bowel, impaired detoxifying ability, impaired neurotransmitter synthesis, physical de-conditioning - the entire field of natural medicine.

There is every reason to tackle such conditions with some confidence, but you do need to find a health professional who looks for causes of things rather than just treating symptoms - and it will require work and persistence on the part of the person with the affliction.

Very best wishes to both of you,
Jim Rose

Mites ~ Scabies ~ Itching

Nov - 2009 - the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor" page on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:
First Name: Janet
State/Prov: Arkansas
Country: United States
Your Question or Health Concern:
I have been diagnosed with an itch mite or scabies. I was given an topical lotion it cleared it up for about a week but, they returned, now I have been given a prescription for an oral medication called Stromectol that is suppose to work if the topical lotion didn't.

I have been applying a mixture of tea tree oil and olive oil which seems to be helping. Can you tell me what I must do to get rid of these mites?
Thank you for any help you can give me.
Janet

Dr. Rose replies to Janet's Question :
Dear Janet ,
Scabies is caught from someone and can be caught again from the same source, so any treatment needs to include avoiding or treating the source person or objects. The latter are usually clothes, but I had one patient who got the infestation when cleaning out an house to renovate it. Washing in hot water and steam ironing will kill the mite on clothes and bedding. The itch is due to allergy to the mite products and it will take a while to settle, even if all the mites are dead.
Regards,
Dr. Jim

Depression - Excess Hair - and More...

Sept. 2009, the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor" page on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:

First Name: Brandy
State/Prov: Louisiana
Country: United States
Your Question or Health Concern:

Hi, My name is Brandy and I am a 31 year old female. I just found this site today and know nothing about what I should or should not be eating. I have 2 two children.

My problem is this I have had facial hair since 12 years of age. It has been getting worse with age. I've been very unhappy since I gave birth 16 months ago. My doctor put me on *(a mediance) for postpartum depression. I took it for 4 months and stopped. It made me feel terrible. I also have no sex drive, have not been able to lose the weight I've gained since my pregnancy. I was put on bed rest for 6 months of the pregnancy and she still came 6 weeks early.

My temper has also been short. I always feel tired and don't sleep good at night. The last time I went to the doctor she was so mean to me that I cried in the office. I find that no one wants to be around me. My doctor's solution is medication that only masks the symptoms not help. Thanks for any help.

Brandy
* We are not sure of the spelling on this - or if she perhaps meant to say ( medicine )

Dr. Rose's answer for Brandy:

Dear Brandy,
If you google womenshealth.med.monash.edu.au/.../hirsutism-excess-body-hair.pdf you will find a very good article on the hair problem. It is very unlikely that you have any nasty condition causing it, and it will almost certainly be a choice of the usual treatments outlined in the article.

A lot of health problems come down to our food and our attitude to life in general. I really is worth the effort to eat well, avoiding things in packets with long shelf lives, full of goodness knows what chemicals. My apologies if you already work according to this rule.

One woman's meat is another woman's poison. One method for telling if something is good for you, is using Dr. Arthur Coca's pulse test - foods bad for you speed up your pulse.

Try to count your blessings, every day! It's not easy when you're mood is low, but there is going to be a best point in every day, for you to give a brief thanks for. It mightn't be much, but it's worth the practice to be thankful for something. It sort of grows on you after a while.

Very best wishes...........

Loss of Taste and Smell

July 2009 the following results were submitted from the
'Ask the Doctor' form :

First Name: Gratz
Country: Malta
Your Question or Health Concern:
Greetings. Since last November, I started losing my sense of taste and smell. Recently i went to an ENT specialist. He figured my sinuses are inflamed and blames it on an allergy. I have not found an allergist as yet, but he strongly suspects its dust. It is not something I can get away from here, unfortunately. I am now taking a course of steroids for 15 days, but the spray I have to take for 4 months and then twice a year. Now this is really only an assumption,as I did not have a test.....but I am wondering...will this medication heal me or is it just healing the symptoms? Can you advise please,as I do not wish to totally lose my sense of smell or taste. I do not normally take Allopathic medicines {referring to mainstream medicines and pharmaceuticals }, so i am finding it a bit scary.....

Dr. Rose replies to Gratz :

Dear Gratz,
A couple of things are worth checking on particularly, are your Zinc and Omega 3 polyunsaturated oil status.

A reasonably useful test for Zinc is the taste test, as described by Professor Bryce-Smith in his book "The Zinc Solution".You can buy the solution for this test.

Zinc deficiency is important in immune function, skewing this towards Th2 and allergy. Lack of Zinc also causes loss of taste and smell.Omega 3 oils are low in modern diets, and this increases a tendency to inflammation. The steroid therapy is fair enough to get some quick relief, but longer use carries considerable risks and certainly doesn't cure anything. Intranasal steroids are a tiny dose by comparison, and don't appear to carry any general risk to the body. The lining of your nose is a separate issue, but again not a major problem. The dust people become allergic to is house dust, not outside dirt dust. It's worth managing your bedding to reduce exposure to the house dust mite. A tumble dryer will kill this creature, as will sunshine and drying outside.

regarding Chron's

June 2009 - the following results were submitted from the 'Comments' form - but we wanted to include it on our Ask the Doctor page. First Name: C____ (name withheld by request)
State/Prov: Queensland
Country: Australia

Your Message or Comments: I have been suffering from Crohns disease for over45 years.

I have had 3 resections, { surgeries } tried most things, am not taking any prescription drugs, but do suffer from chronic explosive foul smelling yellow diarrhea and gas all the time.

I would be most grateful for any help you can send to me.
Kind regards, C____

C____ - although you did not give us a lot of in-depth information to work with - because you have had several surgeries - we submitted the question to Dr. Rose - and he graciously answered you as best he could .

Dr. Jim's answer:

Your diarrhea may be due to removal of large bowel, which normally removes a lot of water from the liquid small bowel contents, to produce our formed faeces.

If this is not so, active Crohns disease may be the reason, but not necessarily the only reason.

Any number of other conditions may coexist with this, such as dysbiosis, food intolerance, disturbance of your autonomic nervous system etc.

I like Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt's “5 levels of healing,” as a framework to ensure you look at all aspects of holistic management.
See Neuraltherapy.com

If you haven't already done so, I would start with stool analysis, through Metametrix labs. "Clinical Insights" in Sydney are their agents in Australia.

Your Question or Health Concern: Hi im Ivailo, 15 years old. I have some nasty zits on my back near the neck and the shoulders, can u help me get them off...?

Dr. Jim Rose.....

Hi Ivailo,
Congratulations on looking at a site for natural health, regarding your spots. Now the "hard yards" - acne is caused by diet problems - but at least that means you can fix it.Look at your fingernails for bright white spots. If you have them, you need more zinc. Are you perfectly well otherwise ? - if not, at your age I would suspect intolerance to some food. These are the two most likely reasons.

You can click a link here and it will take you to Dr. Rose's website to view a page that has 'Coca's pulse test' directions. It will tell you how to take your pulse after eating particular foods that may have caused a negative reaction in your body. State/Prov: Castro Valley, CA 94546

Your Question or Health Concern: I had a colonoscopy, which showed no serious problem, but I still have a very soft stool which causes the problem of soiling. The stool is soft with hard pieces inside. How can I have a normal stool again?

I am a health-conscious person, having a good diet of fruits and vegetables etc... I am an active senior citizen.

Dr. Jim Rose....You have quite correctly been checked for serious disease of your colon, leaving functional problems to be considered. Our large bowel contains more germs than our entire body has cells, and their health is our health. About thirty species are really good for our health, and some are distinctly not good for us.

Then there are the larger organisms, from one celled up to 30 ft. tapeworms - the "parasites."

You could initially treat yourself on spec, with probiotics. The next step could be a comprehensive stool analysis, these days done with"polymerase chain reaction" - PCR - DNA testing for germs and parasites...such as that offered by Metametrix labs.

regarding Celiac diagnosis and Bad Breath

On Sun Apr 05 13:06:25 2009, the following results were submitted from the "Ask the Doctor" page on basic-keys-to-natural-health.com:

First Name: Carol Ann
State/Prov: CT
Country: United States

Your Question or Health Concern:

I have celiac sprue. I was just diagnosed last week. I have been on a gluten- free diet for about one week. I go and have integrative manual therapy and diagnostics. Now all day long my breath really stinks even though I brush my teeth. My breath has never been this bad before. What can I do ?
Thank you, Carol

Dr. Rose answers:
Hi Carol,
This is not something which happens regularly, when first on a gluten free diet. It is well known amongst sheep farmers that you can't change between pasture and grain feeding suddenly, because the sheep intestines have to get used to one or the other. I wouldn't be surprised if the same applies to humans. It might be worth taking supplemental digestive enzymes temporarily, in case your stomach is having trouble with your new diet.

Do you have gum disease or post nasal drip from infected sinuses? Gum disease may not be very obvious, and only show as just a narrow deeper pink line alongside each tooth. Either of these conditions could cause bad breath.
You can click here and it will open another window at Dr.Rose's website page regarding - Gum Disease .

Celiac disease is underdiagnosed. Until recently, only about 5% of Americans with it were diagnsied. 1% of people are believed to have it. It starts in childhood, but most people are diagnosed in their 3rd to 7th decades of life. The TTG blood test is not as accurate as formerly believed. Only 50% of people with this have, have celiac disease on biopsy, so it is really only a screening test. It picks up 80% of celiac disease, provided that the people have been eating gluten at the time. If someone has already been on a gluten free diet, the gene test can be used. One study showed that of every twenty people on a gluten free diet, only one of them had celiac disease. A negative gene test will tell if you are one of the other 19. You can be allergic to wheat and the other cereal grains without having celiac disease. The gene test is not much use for diagnosing celiac though, as it is positive in about a third of the healthy population. It is only useful for ruling out the diagnsois.
